NPR is carrying the story of Ernest Gagnon who at 570 pounds just said “f”-it and decided it was time to ride. Of all the riding events he picked CX. Possibly the most gruelling of the cycling events in terms of its demands on rider and machine it is impressive as hell that this rank amateur just went for it.

The slender, athletic racers are panting and working hard. For Gagnon, however, it’s actually physically dangerous. He has angina, and his doctor told him not to let his heart rate get too high during the race, or he could end up in the hospital; something that has happened before.

His count so far? 240 pounds down. This guy is a poster child for everything that cycling can be. Way to go Ernest!
